Leave the Tilling to Mother Nature

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Whether talking to farmers in France, Ghana or southern Ohio, Rafiq Islam’s message is consistent: Tilling the land does more long-term damage than good.
As an Ohio State University soil scientist, Islam is among the disciples in the movement to convince farmers that plowing their fields before they plant or after they harvest harms the health of the soil and its ability to spur growth and resist erosion.

Aquaculture Genetics Laboratory at OSU South Center continually received Dean's List certificate of achievement in 2016, recognizing the laboratory’s safety research operation and management. South Center staff Hong Yao is the manager of the laboratory. She has put a lot of efforts and hard work in management of the lab research, operations, and equipment.

PIKETON, Ohio – Healthy water leads to healthy fish and increases the potential for healthy profits for fish farmers.
On the other hand, poor water quality can lead to stressed fish, increasing the chance for the animals’ illness and death, and resulting in income losses for farmers, says Matthew Smith, an Ohio State University Extension aquaculture specialist.

Growing cover crops, practicing long-term no-till and spreading gypsum on the soil — all of which offer the triple benefit of better soil health, crop yields and water quality — also are on the agenda.

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center has announced the winners of the research poster competition held during the center’s 2016 annual research conference in Wooster on April 21.
The competition, which drew 106 entries, recognized outstanding research posters by OARDC-supported graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research assistants and associates.

Ms. Hiam S. Desouky, who was trained through a joint Ph.D. training program between OSU South Center and Benha University in Cairo, passed her defense and received her Ph.D. recently in School of Veterinary Medicine, Benha University. Dr. Hiam S. Desouky completed her Ph.D. dissertation research in Dr. Hanping Wang’s Aquaculture Genetics Lab, OSU South Centers during April 2013-March 2015, after finishing her course work in Benha University.
