Tomatoes
Objectives(s) of Tomato Production Research and Education:
This research explores and identifies tomato cultivar and variety releases including fresh market, processing, heirloom, cherry and grape varieties. Research is also conducted on improving tomato production practices for their suitability, marketability, growth and production characteristics, pollination management, bacterial, viral and fungal disease monitoring and control, insect management & control, nutrient monitoring and management, management of physiological tomato fruit disorders, high tunnel & season extension studies, tomato plant grafting techniques and irrigation requirements under typical south central Ohio growing season to introduce this cropping system in Ohio.
Planned Scope of Research:
Tomato crop performance evaluations are monitored and recorded relative to standard varieties and growing practices at the OSU South Centers research farm and on farm research conducted on cooperating growers farms. At each harvest yield data and crop quality attributes are observed and recorded. Plant growth characteristics, insect and disease susceptibility and tolerance, and system economics are monitored and recorded.
Potential outcomes & significance of outcomes:
These research trials assist with the identification of new cultivars and crop management options that can increase the profitability of Ohio tomato growers and introduce new production techniques that may increase the economic profitability for Ohio tomato farms. Tomato research began in 1994 and new research and education projects continue today.
Tomato varieties include: Mountain Glory, BHN 961, Charger, Fletcher, Mountain Mist, and Sunkeeper.
