| Genetic Breeding - O’GIFT Program Ohio Genetic Improvement of Farmed-fish Traits (O’GIFT) Program is a long-term broodstock improvement program being funded by USDA and based in OSU South Centers. The overall goal of the program is to create, through long-term selective breeding and molecular approach, superior fish broodstocks with traits amenable to commercial-scale aquaculture in Ohio and the Midwest. The O’GIFT Program currently includes three major projects on genetic improvements for yellow perch, bluegill and largemouth bass, which are top three cultured species in Ohio. The O’GIFT Program started in 2004, and is experiencing significant progress: Eight strains of YP were obtained from eight states and stock evaluations in genetic variation and growth have been completed. Approximately 2,000 genetically superior broodfish were selected as the base breeding population for the long-term selective breeding program. To date, eight improved lines of perch have been produced and distributed to farmers and a research facility for initial commercial-scale tests. Current research data show that the improved lines grow 18.3%-39.8% faster than unimproved fish. Forty-five new microsatellite markers have been developed, and a method for parentage analysis of YP has been established. For bluegill, three batches of sex reversed fish were produced for developing genetically male bluegill. Sex specific makers have been identified and genetic linkage map has been constructed for selective breeding. Genetically male bluegill, which would grow 40-50% faster than a mixed-gender population, are expected to be produced from 2007. To better achieve the long-term program goal, an Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Laboratory has been established at Piketon. The combination of aquaculture genetics lab, wet lab and field facility in our center is unique in the Midwest and will greatly enhance our ability to secure extramural funding. The outcomes of the program are expected to increase the efficiency and profitability of farmed yellow perch, bluegill by 35-50%.
