Chinchillas, Ferrets, and Hedgehogs - With the revision of the Small Animal Resource Handbook, the new Pocket Pets Resource Handbook only has information about gerbils, hamsters, mice, and rats. This is becuase more than 90% of youth who took the former Small Animals projects were enrolled with these four species of rodents. I've been getting several calls from 4-H professionals and volunteers wondering where to enroll youth taking chinchillas, ferrets, and hedgehogs. We hope to have Idea Starters for these projects in 2012; however, for this year, those youth should take these three species as Self-Determined projects. We still recommend they be judged during a county's Small Animal Judging. At the Ohio State Fair Companion Animal Judging, these animals will be judged in the Self-Determined category.
